Jaguars make several roster moves; three players placed on injured reserve

The Jacksonville Jaguars today placed cornerback Rashean Mathis (knee), offensive tackle Eben Britton (back) and linebacker Kyle Bosworth (hand) on injured reserve.  Second-year tight end Fendi Onobun was signed off Washington’s practice squad to the 53-man roster and tight end Colin Cloherty was added to the practice squad, while rookie tight end Schuylar Oordt was waived from the practice squad.  The Jaguars’ roster stands at 51 players.

Mathis injured his knee in the second quarter of Sunday’s win in Indianapolis.  He has played in 125 games for the Jaguars, the sixth-most in team history, since joining the club as a second-round draft pick in 2003.  He holds the franchise records with 35 career takeaways, 30 interceptions, three interceptions returned for touchdowns and 512 interception return yards.  This season Mathis intercepted Mark Sanchez in week three against the New York Jets and recovered a fumble in the first quarter in week seven against Baltimore.

Britton, a second-round draft pick in 2009, has started 25 games including three games in 2011. He has been inactive the last three games after playing in four of the first five.  Bosworth played in the first nine games on special teams and injured his hand Sunday against the Colts.

Onobun, 6-6, 249, was a sixth-round draft pick of the St. Louis Rams in 2010 and has also spent time on the practice squad for Seattle and Washington.  He played in three games as a rookie for the Rams and had two receptions for 15 yards before he was placed on injured reserve.  A native of Houston, Texas, he played one season of football at Houston after a four-year college basketball career at Arizona.  In his only season with the Cougars he played extensively on special teams and added two receptions for 33 yards and one touchdown.

Cloherty, 6-2, 245, has spent time with Indianapolis, Cleveland and San Francisco.  He was originally signed as a rookie free agent by the Colts in 2009 and had one reception in week 17 at Buffalo.  He was signed by the 49ers to the practice squad on Oct. 3, 2010 and was activated to the 53-man roster for the final two games.  A native of Bethesda, Maryland, he was a three-year letterman at Brown where he finished with 99 career receptions for 1,211 yards and nine touchdowns.
